Self-Fire Inspections
South Montgomery County Fire Departments Self-Fire Inspection Program is designed for smalllight hazard commercial occupancies that do not have a high occupant load. Light hazard occupancies are locations where there is a low amount of combustible materials within the occupied space, including furnishings, decorations, and contents. These occupancies may include: Small business or professional offices, small retail shops, small personal service shops (Barber, beauty shops, etc.), small apartment complexes with 3 or more units, etc. If your business fits into this type of description, you are eligible to perform your own self-fire inspection(s) which may decrease the interval an actual fire department inspection is conducted. You can perform these inspections as often as you desire, however, a reminder will be E-mailed to you on a yearly basis after the last inspection was completed. Occupancies not counted in this program, even though they will be visited by the South Montgomery County Fire Department on a regular basis, are also encouraged to perform self-fire inspections.
PERFORMING SELF-FIRE INSPECTIONS WILL PROMOTE A SAFER YEAR-ROUND ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR BUSINESS AND THE PUBLIC. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING ABOUT WORKPLACE FIRES:
- There are approximately 75,000 fires annually that cost businesses over $2 billion
- These fires kill more than 200 and injure more than 5,000 people each year
- 45% of businesses never reopen after a fire due to the high cost of recovery and repairs
